John S. Gardner was raised in Ionia County, Michigan. He was 20 years old when he enlisted on 9/9/1861 at Muir, MI as a Private.
On 10/14/1861 he mustered into "D" Co. MI 3rd Cavalry
He Re-enlisted on 1/27/1864
He was Mustered Out on 2/12/1866 at San Antonio, TX
John was a farmer, born in Cleveland, Ohio to Nelson P. Gardner of Vermont and Nancy Ward Gardner of Cleveland, Ohio. Sarah Gardner signed the death certificate that can be viewed at the link below;
